Our logo - What does it mean?

The Japanese Sign in our logo (柔術)
The Japanese sign used across the black and white part of the logo mean Ju Jitsu.
The yin and yang background is a philosophical concept that describes how opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary and how they may rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. In Martial Arts terms, this means that instead of meeting force with force, Ju Jitsu is aiming to redirect an opponent's strength against themselves by continuously adapting until a satisfactory outcome is reached.
What is a Dojo?
Dojo literally means “place of the way”, referring to a place where people practice and improve both physical skills and personal discipline.
What does Sensei & Senpai mean?

Senpai means “senior” or “one who has more experience.” (Senior adults students who are still working towards their Black Belt)
The origins of Jujitsu
The Jujitsu used by the Samurai was developed mainly for battlefield situations where weapons were lost or could not be used effectively.

On the battlefield, Samurai often wore heavy armour. Punching or kicking armour was ineffective, so techniques focused on:

-
Throws
-
Joint locks
-
Pins
-
Chokes

These methods helped control or disable an opponent even while both were armoured.
Sometimes enemies needed to be restrained rather than killed, especially guards or prisoners. Jujitsu techniques allowed a samurai to immobilise someone safely.
On a crowded battlefield, long weapons were not always practical. Jujitsu provided grappling techniques for very close fighting.

This combination of factors forced Samurai to develop jujitsu so they could defend themselves and control opponents in close combat, especially if they lost their weapons.
What are the kuy grades?

Kyū ranks progress using a descending order system, so 1st kyū is the highest. For example, the first kyū outranks the 2nd kyū. The Dan ranking system starts after 1st kyū. Essentially, the kyū is the number of steps before reaching mastery whereas the dan gives steps into mastery.
